With a desire to go racing, Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929. Based in Modena, Italy, Ferrari raced Alfa Romeo racing cars, functioning as a racing division of Alfa Romeo. For the 1933 season Alfa Romeo withdrew their in-house racing team, with Scuderia Ferrari taking over as the new works team until 1938, when Alfa decided to once again go in-house for their racing efforts. With this, Enzo was hired as manager of the new racing department, and Scuderia Ferrari was disbanded.

The following year in 1939, Enzo left Alfa Romeo under the conditions of not using the Ferrari name in racing for four years. He went on to start-up Auto Avio Costruzioni, using the same facilities of the old Scuderia Ferrari. There they built machine tools and aircraft accessories, until 1940, when Ferrari produced the Tipo 815 race car. It debuted in the 1940 Mille Miglia, but saw little action due to World War II. 1943 saw the factory move to Maranello, with the first Ferrari badged car produced in 1947 called the 125 S. Eventually the Scuderia Ferrari name was returned, and later in 1960, the whole company was restructured as a public corporation under the name SEFAC S.p.A. (Società Esercizio Fabbriche Automobili e Corse). In Early 1969, Fiat bought a 50% share in Ferrari which helps boost the financial coffers of the company. Enzo Ferrari raced his last lap in 1988, dieing just after the release of the famous Ferrari F40. Later in 2002, the company named their new halo car the Enzo Ferrari in honour of their founder.
